Construction Industry Institute (CII) Modularization Community for Business Advancement (MCBA) had its annual face-to-face meeting during the CII Annual Research Conference (ARC 2026) in Denver, CO. The new chair, Cathy Farina, and the new vice chair, Amrit Shahi, led the F2F meeting successfully. Over 25 members attended the meeting. This year, MCBA had a modularization/HSE moment on the nuclear power plant (Amrit), reviewed past and current modularization research (Jin Ouk Choi), and developed/discussed two interesting research ideas for next year’s CII research, focusing on industry problems, needs, and expected values.

2026 Spring

Dr. Choi and his students delivered four presentations at the CI&CRC2026 conference in San Antonio, TX.

Dr. Choi delivered a proposal presentation at the CRC 2026 business meeting to host the CRC 2028 at UNLV. Over 100 people voted for UNLV. As a result, UNLV (Dr. Pramen Shrestha and Dr. Jin Ouk Choi, co-chairs) will host the Construction Research Congress 2028 (CRC 2028) in mid-May 2028 at the UNLV campus in Las Vegas, NV. Over 800 attendees are expected.

Dr. Choi helped 30 UNLV students (20 CEEC, 5 Mechanical, 4 Computer Engineering, and one Electrical) receive a one-day complementary registration scholarship (out of 50 slots) to attend the 2026 World of Modular Annual Convention & Tradeshow, which was held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas from April 20 to 23, 2026.

Kiran and Dr. Choi delivered a presentation entitled “Economic Decision Tool for Automation Investments in Modular Factories: Breakeven & Sensitivity Analysis” as invited speakers at the 2026 World of Modular Annual Convention & Tradeshow, organized by the Modular Building Institute (MBI). Over 40 practitioners attended the session, and the presentation was well received.

My Research Team (RT)-421 (https://lnkd.in/gb6RgJYp) had a very productive and successful hybrid meeting at the KBR, Inc. office in Houston, TX!

Fall 2025 ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering editorial board meeting. The journal is the top-ranked among the 36 American Society of Civil Engineers-published journals and is highly respected in the engineering management field across architecture, engineering, construction, and the built environment.

Raquel Floyd, from Rock Solid Solutions, for delivering a guest lecture to my UNLV Civil and Environmental Eng. and Construction Construction Scheduling class last week.

Dr. Choi delivered a webinar with Ruben Steketee (Worley) and David Kerr (Shell) on modularization.

CII RT-421 Hybrid Meeting

Dr. Choi and PMCE lab students hosted the Construction Industry Institute (CII) Research Team (RT)-421 hybrid meeting in Las Vegas, NV, on June 25-26, 2025.

2025 World of Modular

Dr. Choi delivered a presentation, “The state of the modular building: Characteristics & Productivity,” with my former Graduate Research Assistant, Sibgat Mehedi Hasan. This year, thanks to the Modular Building Institute (MBI), twenty UNLV College of Engineering UNLV Civil and Environmental Eng. and Construction graduate students taking my Modular Construction course were able to attend the event through the registration scholarship.

Dr. Choi took his UNLV Civil and Environmental Eng. and Construction CEE/CEM 710 Modular Construction class students to Local leading modular company, BOXABL.

2025 International OSC Conference

Dr. Choi deliverd an invited presentation “Global Modular Trend & Activation” at the 2025 International Off-Site Construction Conference on Februrary 19, KINTEX, Korea which had about 230 attendees.

Andrew Xue delivered an insightful guest lecture to my Construction Scheduling and Resource Optimization class. The presentation on offsite/modular construction and Offsight provided our students an opportunity to learn about the future of construction and emerging cutting-edge technology that can help create an optimum environment for broader and more effective use of modularization!

Dr. Choi lead CII Research team (RT-421) hybrid kickoff meeting in Austin, TX. Over the next two years, this team will develop an innovative, clear, concise, and complete industrial modularization implementation and advanced planning guide to advance current modular industrial project planning, design, and execution to the next level.

ASCE CRC & CI 2024 Joint Conference

Amrit and Sibgat delivered two presentations and two posters, and Dr. Choi moderated two sessions at the ASCE’s CI & CRC Joint Conference in Des Moines, IA. Many academics attended the presentations and stopped by the posters.

World of Modular 2024

Dr. Choi successfully delivered a presentation titled “Smart Technologies for Modular Buildings” at the 2024 World of Modular Annual Convention & Tradeshow, Orlando, FL, on March 19, 2024. About 60 practitioners in modular construction were in my session. Received many good and positive feedback from them.

Dr. Choi received an outstanding leadership award from the Korean-American Construction Engineering and Project Management Association on June 27, 2023, during their annual meeting.

2023 Modular Building Fellow Award

Dr. Choi received the 2023 Modular Building Fellow Award from the Modular Building Institute (MBI) at the 2023 World of Modular Conference, which had over 1,500 registrants, on April 1, 2023, held in the Bellagio Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The Modular Building Fellow Award is awarded for leadership, contribution, and commitment to modular construction, recognizing a professor each year that has contributed to advancing commercial modular construction through education and research. MBI stated that they named Dr. Jin Ouk Choi as their 2023 Modular Building Fellow considering his work at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the classroom and lab, his papers and research on modularization, hosting of conferences, his new book, and his support of MBI and the industry, in general. Five PMCEL students also received the World of Modular Scholarship.

The 9th International Conference on Construction Engineering and Project Management

Dr. Choi co-hosted the 9th international conference on Construction Engineering and Project Management. Two hundred sixty people attended the conference. The attendees came from 12 different countries and 78 different cities. Among 231 abstracts and full papers submitted, 162 of them were presented/published in the proceedings.
